New York State Network for Youth Success: Power of 3:00 Ambassadors
This year, the Po3 Ambassadors program is taking place during a critical and turbulent time for the afterschool field.
The COVID-19 pandemic created extraordinary circumstances that significantly impact the afterschool field, and the students, families, and communities afterschool programs serve. Our country and state will emerge from COVID-19 in a different place. We know how afterschool, summer, and expanded learning programs have stepped up amid this pandemic. We also know that these programs will continue to play a crucial role to ensure children are cared for safely and supported academically, socially, and emotionally so that families can return to work with peace of mind.
Afterschool advocacy is even more critical at this time.
- With anticipated adjustments to the State’s finances amid budget uncertainty, we must ensure that current investments in afterschool are maintained so that afterschool programs can continue to best serve their participants, families, and staff. The need for increased funding to ensure health and safety; staff pay, training and professional development; and increased operational expenses cannot be underscored enough.
- As schools across regions plan how they will open, we must elevate the need for and benefits of partnering with afterschool, summer, and expanded learning programs to address growing student needs.
- Afterschool, summer, and expanded learning programs need continued contractual flexibility and an effective contract management process to support an adequate, efficient, and coordinated response toward recovery.
The Power of 3:00 Ambassador program offers you the opportunity to channel your passion for afterschool, summer, and expanded learning programs through advocacy. The program hosts passionate afterschool, summer, and expanded learning providers and supporters from across New York State to work directly with staff from the Network’s Policy Department to develop the advocacy and media skills to become effective advocates for the youth they serve. Power of 3:00 Ambassadors participate in a one-year cohort experience where they learn and gain relevant advocacy skills at no cost. It is a critical time to emphasize the benefits of afterschool to elected officials, education leaders, and other relevant stakeholders.
What is the timeframe for the program?
The program runs from September 2020 to May 2021. This includes orientation activities and monthly workshop calls to plan and develop your skills.
Is this an in-person or virtual program?
This program has been redesigned to maximize virtual participation throughout the experience. The program runs from September 2020 through May 2021. All events through December 2020 will take place virtually. However, depending on guidelines from the CDC and New York State and comfort of our participants, the Network will explore options for hosting one in-person event in Albany, NY in 2021. Attendance to the event will be optional for Ambassadors and participants. After program completion, Ambassadors will join the alumni network and have continued opportunities to engage in the Network’s policy efforts.
