New York State Network for Youth Success

We’re encouraged by the news that the federal government will release FY2025 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funds to states in the coming days. This long-overdue action will allow essential afterschool and summer programs to continue serving millions of children—including nearly 60,000 in New York—who rely on these safe, enriching spaces to learn, grow, and thrive. This is also a critical win for the youth development professionals who make these opportunities possible and for the families who depend on these programs for consistency, care, and support. We’re grateful to the bipartisan group of federal lawmakers who acted to ensure these funds would be released, responding to the call from families, educators, and communities across the country. Their support affirms the essential role that afterschool and summer programs play in helping young people succeed. This outcome reflects the strength of collective advocacy. We are especially thankful to the youth, families, program leaders, youth workers, community champions, and legislators who stepped up to protect these vital services. And, to the Afterschool Alliance for its steadfast leadership in mobilizing the field and keeping stakeholders informed—its role was central to making this result possible. While this decision brings critical stability for the current school year, the long-term future of 21st CCLC funding is still at risk. Ongoing attention and advocacy will be essential to ensure this vital support for children, families, and youth workers is not only maintained, but strengthened. As Congress moves into FY26 budget negotiations, the broad public and bipartisan support for these programs must be reflected in sustained, long-term investment. ... See MoreSee Less
