September 30 has become recognized as “Orange Shirt Day,” an international commemoration and observance of the impact of the residential boarding school systems that were focused on removing Indigenous children from their homes, communities, and cultures as a way of forcibly assimilating Native children into American and Canadian society. This commemoration first started in British Columbia, Canada, and has grown to include many events on both sides of the US-Canadian border.
