Lights on Afterschool UpdateThe 25th annual Lights On Afterschool (LOA) celebration is 6 weeks away! Every year, LOA shines a spotlight on the importance of afterschool programs. This is a great opportunity to welcome community members, including elected officials, to your program to showcase the important work afterschool does for youth and families. There are many ways to celebrate LOA: rallies, carnivals, block parties, student showcases, etc. If you’re having trouble deciding on a specific event idea, hosting an open house is a great way to shine a light on your afterschool program. Make your open house fun and memorable by centering it around a theme or incorporating family-friendly games and activities into your event. An open house is also a great opportunity to invite your local policymakers (city council members, state legislators, and the mayor) to come enjoy the celebration! We recommend inviting your policymakers early to help them block time off to visit your program. This is a unique opportunity to see firsthand the type of impact your programs have on youth and families. Remember to promote your celebration! Click here for helpful sample social media posts, and be sure to register your Lights On event sooner rather than later as each registered event will receive 10 free promotional posters.Click the link for access to the lights on planning tool kit and sample planning timelines.www.afterschoolalliance.org/loaChecklist.cfm ...
